Aerosols in Dentistry: What We Should Know

How soon should we use aerosol producing instruments in our practice?

Aerosols in dentistry are a hot topic. This is because there are so many unknowns about this current pandemic COVID-19. The most important known, however, is that it will be with us for a while.

This prerecorded virtual dental summit sponsored by EMS attempted to address some of the fears about aerosols in dentistry. This helps us as clinicians learn ways that we can stay safe while still providing dental care.

The speakers are dentists, hygienists and other specialists in the field of aerosol production. One of the videos from the summit is below.

Dr. Donnet (PhD), a speaker at the Summit explains what the different types of aerosols are and what the implications are for our dental practice.

EMS explains what techniques should be used to reach the target 95% reduction of aerosols during dental hygiene appointments using high volume evacuators (HVE).

EMS obviously has a stake in this game and are not unbiased observers. The less we use their product, the smaller their bottom line. After all is said and done, we will need to use our professional judgement about when and how to use aerosol creating instruments in our daily practice. Nevertheless, the better informed we are, the easier it will be to make an informed decision.
